Edit and review a post

Follow the edit and review a post workflow in Slack.

Goal

Edit draft copy, preview media, reject with reasons, and move posts through approval without losing brand context. Use the same preview and review flow whether you arrive from an approval notification, App Home, or Plan.

When to use this

Open review when a post is in pending approval or an editable draft state, when you need to fix copy before sign-off, when you must reject or request changes with structured reasons, or when you need to archive, restore, or inspect source history for an existing post.

Before you begin

  • You have access to the Create work center.
  • The post is in review or an editable draft, or you have permission to open archived posts for the active brand.
  • Know whether your workspace uses Slack approval threads. Edits refresh those threads when thread-based review is enabled.
  • Configured rejection reasons require Team or Scale plans. Multi-step approval workflows are also on Team and Scale plans. Starter and Free workspaces use simpler approval paths.

Steps

Open a post for review

Use whichever entry point matches how you were notified:

  1. Type /social-approve to open the approvals list, or tap the approval notification for the item.
  2. Choose Open Review on a pending row.
  3. Or from Plan, Posts, or a preview card, open Preview to inspect copy, media, schedule, and platform targets.

The preview modal is the hub for edit, reject, archive, and source-history actions.

Inspect the preview

Before you edit or reject, confirm:

  • Caption and overrides match what should go live.
  • Media previews load (skip expecting images when generation is still running).
  • Schedule and platform targets are correct for the active brand.

Open source details when your review view offers them and you need to see where the post came from.

Edit copy inline

  1. From the preview or approval modal, choose Edit.
  2. Update the caption or post fields shown in the inline edit modal.
  3. Submit.

The post copy updates. Approval threads refresh when your workspace uses thread-based review. You can also edit from the approval thread when your workspace routes review there.

If the item returns to pending approval after an edit, the creator’s changes are ready for another pass.

Reject or request changes

  1. Choose Reject or Request changes.
  2. Pick configured rejection reasons. Add a comment when your workspace requires one.
  3. Submit.

Reject cancels the draft. Request changes sends feedback to the creator with status changes requested.

Rejection reason lists are configurable on Team and Scale plans. If you do not see reason chips, your admin may not have configured them yet.

Reschedule from preview (when shown)

If the preview offers reschedule controls, open Reschedule or the schedule action on the preview card, pick a new slot, and submit. Use this when timing is the only blocker and copy is already approved.

Archive, restore, and source history

  • Archive removes active scheduling context while keeping history.
  • Restore returns archived posts to the active library when your role permits. Open View archived posts when you need to find archived items.
  • Source details show where the post came from when that information is available.

Choose Keep archived when prompted if the post should stay out of the active queue.

Multi-step approvals (Team and Scale)

When your workspace uses multi-step approvals, each step may route to different approvers. Complete your step in the preview or approval thread. The post moves to the next step or to approved when the workflow finishes. Creators see pending approval until all required steps complete.

Success criteria

Review is complete when status matches the action you took:

ActionExpected outcome
Edit and resubmitCopy updates; status may stay or return to pending approval
Approve (in thread or modal)Moves toward approved or publishing queue
Request changeschanges requested; creator receives feedback
Rejectrejected; draft leaves the approval queue
ArchivePost leaves active scheduling; history retained
RestoreArchived post returns to the active library

Edited copy appears in preview and in the Slack approval thread when configured. Counts on App Home and approval lists should match the item’s new status.

Troubleshooting

Preview or Open Review does nothing

Confirm you are on the active brand for the post. Switch brands in App Home and try again. If the modal fails to open, return to /social-approve and select the row once more.

Reject modal requires a comment you cannot submit

Your workspace may require comments for certain reasons. Fill the comment field or pick a different reason. Admins configure required comments in review reason settings on Team and Scale plans.

Post stuck in pending approval

An approver may still owe a step, or a multi-step workflow is incomplete. See Recover a post stuck in review. Confirm notifications reached the right channel or DM.

Thread does not update after edit

Thread repair may lag if Slack could not update the root message. Open preview again to confirm copy saved. Refresh App Home if counts look stale.

You are new to approvals

Walk through Approve and publish your first post for the full publish path after review.
