workflow · how to
DM the bot when the idea is still raw.
Follow the dm the bot when the idea is still raw. workflow in Slack.
Goal
Capture rough ideas in Slack before they are ready for a full Create flow. Send a link, file, voice note, Slack thread, canvas, or text note to the Slash Social bot in a direct message, then route the signal into a draft, idea, import, or knowledge path.
When to use this
DM the bot when inspiration arrives outside App Home: an article you want to repurpose, a screenshot from a colleague, a thread worth turning into a post, or a half-written note you do not want to lose. Use this instead of opening Create first when you only know you have source material, not the final format.
Before you begin
- Slash Social is installed in your workspace.
- You have access to the Create work center.
- Open a direct message with the Slash Social app, not a channel thread. Intake cards appear in the DM conversation with the bot.
- If your org runs multiple brands, be ready to pick the brand when prompted.
Steps
Open the bot DM
- In Slack search, find Slash Social and open Messages on the app profile.
- Confirm the conversation is a DM with the app, not a public channel.
Send source material
Send one of these inputs:
- A public URL (article, landing page, or similar)
- One or more files: image, video, audio, or PDF
- A voice note
- A Slack thread, canvas, or channel link
- A text note with enough detail to act on
Short greetings alone do not open an intake card. Include the link, file, or a sentence about what you want to do.
Wait for the intake card
Slash Social replies with an intake card that summarizes what it detected and may highlight a suggested next step. Read the summary before you tap a button so you pick the path that matches your intent.
If your workspace has multiple brands, select the brand when prompted. The brand you choose scopes every follow-up record.
Choose the next step
Pick the action that matches what you sent:
| You sent | Common next steps |
|---|---|
| Article or page URL | Import & Repurpose, or format buttons such as carousel, thread, or reel script |
| Files or voice | Save to the media library, open a draft, or save as an idea |
| Slack thread | Draft a post, save as an idea, or add to the knowledge base |
| Slack canvas | Sync canvas to knowledge base |
| Text note | Draft a post, save as an idea, or add to the knowledge base |
Decision guide
- Choose Import & Repurpose when the URL is the main source and you want Slash Social to draft from it.
- Choose Save to the media library when you only need the file stored for later. The content library is on Starter, Team, and Scale plans; it is not on the Free plan.
- Choose Save as an idea when the thought is not ready for a draft.
- Choose Draft a post or a format button when you are ready to open Create with context attached.
- Choose Add to the knowledge base or Sync canvas to knowledge base when the content should inform future generation, not publish immediately.
Confirm the action. Slash Social keeps the source attached as work moves into Create, ideas, or knowledge.
Complete the follow-up flow
After you confirm, Slash Social may open a modal (for example, Create or import), send a confirmation message, or show a saved record. Fill required fields in any modal and submit. The original DM context stays linked to the new item.
Success criteria
Intake succeeded when:
- You received an intake card after sending substantive input.
- The follow-up modal, message, or saved record matches the path you chose.
- The new draft, idea, or knowledge entry shows the brand you selected.
- Source material (URL, file, or thread) is still attached when you open the item in Create or ideas.
After intake, the item may appear as a saved draft, queued for generation, pending approval, or generation failed if media processing does not finish. If generation fails, reopen the item from Create or the Failed Jobs view and retry.
Troubleshooting
No intake card appears
Confirm you messaged the Slash Social app in a DM, not a human teammate or a channel. Pasting a link in App Home or a channel does not run DM intake. Reinstall or update the app if your workspace recently changed Slack permissions.
The card appears but a button does nothing
Wait a few seconds and try again. If a modal should open, check that Slack did not hide it behind another window. Switch back to the DM and tap the action once more.
Save to library is missing
Your plan may not include the content library (Free plan), or the file type may need a different path such as open draft. Upgrade or pick another next step from the card.
Wrong brand on the new item
Cancel if the modal is still open, or archive the mistaken item and resend the source in the DM. Pick the correct brand when the brand prompt appears.
You prefer App Home over DM
Type /social or open App Home and use Create or Command Palette for the same workflows. See Slash commands reference for entry points.
