Use and manage templates
Follow the use and manage templates workflow in Slack.
Goal
Save repeatable post structures, browse them by platform or format, and apply a template when you start a new draft. Templates speed up Create by prefilling caption and structure fields you use often.
When to use this
Use templates when your team posts the same shapes repeatedly:
- Weekly promo layouts with fixed carousel slots
- Platform-specific caption shells your creators fill in each time
- Org-wide starters admins maintain for every brand
- Brand-scoped templates only one client uses
Apply a template when you open Create. Maintain templates when you want to clone, hide, favorite, or edit saved structures without rebuilding from scratch.
Before you begin
Confirm these items:
- You have access to the Create work center
- An active brand is selected in App Home when your workspace has more than one brand
- You have permission to create or edit templates for the brand or organization scope you need
You can open the template browser from App Home, the Command Palette, or from inside the Create modal. No separate slash command is required beyond /social when you search from the palette.
Steps
1. Open the template browser
Pick the entry point that matches where you are working:
From App Home
- Open Slash Social App Home.
- Go to Create.
- Open the Libraries overflow menu.
- Choose Templates. The template browser modal opens.
From the Command Palette
- Type
/socialin any channel and press Enter. - Search for Templates.
- Choose Run to open the browser.
From Create
- Open the Create modal with
/social-createor from App Home. - Choose Choose template when you want to start from a saved structure.
- The browser opens on top of Create so the template can apply to your current draft.
2. Find the right template
Use the browser filters to narrow the list:
- Filter by platform or format when you know the target channel
- Search by template name when you know the label your team uses
- Favorited templates stay easy to find with the favorite toggle
The list refreshes in place when you change filters. Your return context to Create is preserved when you opened the browser from the Create modal.
3. Apply a template to a draft
- Choose Use on the template row you want.
- When you opened the browser from Create, the template structure applies to your current draft immediately.
- When you opened the browser from App Home or the Command Palette, follow the next modal to start or attach a draft.
- Edit caption, media, and scheduling fields in Create before you save or submit for review.
Required template fields stay enforced. You can change copy and media, but structure fields the template defines remain in place until you edit the template itself.
4. Save a new template from an existing post
- From a post or draft, choose Save as template.
- Review the prefilled save modal sourced from that item.
- Submit to store an organization-wide or brand-specific template depending on the scope you select.
5. Maintain templates in the browser
Use these actions without leaving the browser modal:
| Action | Result |
|---|---|
| Clone | Copies the template so you can tweak a variant |
| Favorite | Pins the template for faster filtering |
| Hide | Removes the template from your default browser list |
| Edit | Opens the edit modal for structure and carousel fields |
Submit the edit modal to update the template while preserving required template fields.
Success criteria
You finished this workflow when:
- The browser list refreshes after clone, hide, or favorite actions
- An applied template fills caption and structure fields in Create
- A saved template appears in the browser on the scope you chose (org or brand)
- Edits persist after you submit the edit modal and reopen the browser
Downstream saves can land in draft saved, queued, or pending approval once you complete Create.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Templates missing in Libraries menu | Create work center access or brand context | Confirm active brand and Create access in App Home |
| Browser empty after filter | Platform or format filter too narrow | Clear filters or search by template name |
| Use does not fill Create | Browser opened outside Create | Open Choose template from inside the Create modal |
| Cannot save a template | Scope or permissions | Confirm you can edit templates for that brand or org |
| Edit submit fails | Required template fields | Fill required structure and carousel fields in the edit modal |
| Template hidden but still needed | Hide action applied | Use search or ask an admin to unhide via edit |
| Wrong platform structure applied | Template platform mismatch | Filter by platform before Use, or pick a different template |
